Renowned actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away on Friday at the age of 87 at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
Kumar’s health deteriorated, prompting doctors to admit him to the hospital on February 21, 2025.
Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his ailments, leaving the Indian film industry in mourning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the death of the legendary actor and filmmaker.
In a heartfelt post on the social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films.”
The Prime Minister further added that Manoj Kumar’s works ignited a spirit of national pride, stating, “Manoj Ji’s works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
PM Modi also shared photos from his previous meetings with the actor, honoring his legacy.
Manoj Kumar, popularly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’, earned his place as a national hero through his patriotic roles in Hindi cinema.
He made a mark with several iconic films that remain benchmarks of Indian cinema.
His notable works include Shaheed, Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Do Badan, Patthar Ke Sanam, Neel Kamal, Kranti, Upkar, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, among others. These films, deeply rooted in patriotism and national pride, earned him admiration from audiences and peers alike.
Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manoj Kumar became a household name in Bollywood through his talent and dedication to his craft. Apart from his acclaimed acting, he also directed several films, contributing significantly to the evolution of Indian cinema.
