David Dhawan Recalls Rishi Kapoor’s Discipline And Famous ‘No Night Shoot’ Rule

Veteran director David Dhawan recently narrated a witty anecdote about the late Rishi Kapoor, emphasising his disciplined approach to work. He appeared on The Great Indian Kapil Show with his son, Varun Dhawan.

Dhawan described Rishi Kapoor as a highly talented actor who also maintained a strong sense of discipline on set.

“I have worked with an actor with whom I did many films. He was a brilliant actor, and I learned a lot from him. His name was Rishi Kapoor,” stated Dhawan.

He further asserted, “He would always question all filmmakers and make sure he would pack up at 7 PM. Regarding any scene, he would say, ‘Okay, you are saying this, but why should I do it this way?’ You had to convince him and explain why a scene needed to be done that way. Otherwise, he would stop you right there.”

Sharing a humorous episode, Dhawan recalled, “The car started, and the director began narrating the story. The first scene he described was a night scene. Rishi Kapoor immediately asked the driver to stop the van and said, ‘Stop the car. I don’t do films that shoot at night. I pack up after 7 PM, no matter what.’ That was it. The narration ended there.”

Rishi Kapoor remains one of the most iconic figures in Hindi cinema.

The son of Raj Kapoor, he began as a child artist in Mera Naam Joker and later gained stardom with Bobby. He delivered numerous successful films over several decades, including Amar Akbar Anthony, Karz, and Chandni, before taking on character roles in Kapoor & Sons and 102 Not Out.

Kapoor married Neetu Kapoor, and their son Ranbir Kapoor is a prominent name in Bollywood today. He passed away in Mumbai on April 30, 2020, at the age of 67 after battling leukaemia.
