Dan McGrath, Emmy-Winning Simpsons Writer, Dies At 61

Dan McGrath, the acclaimed television writer known for shaping some of the sharpest comedic moments in modern animation, died on November 14, 2025, after suffering a stroke at his home in Brooklyn.

His family confirmed the news, saying their hearts were “broken” by the loss.

McGrath was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital, where he passed away at the age of 61.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, McGrath carved an unconventional path to television writing.

He studied Japanese and Chinese history and politics in college. While struggling with Japanese courses, he discovered his true calling in writing and satire.

His contributions to The Harvard Lampoon ignited his love for humour, editing and storytelling.

Before entering the television world, McGrath explored a spectrum of careers.

He designed computer games at MIT and later worked in public clinics and emergency rooms.

These diverse experiences shaped his voice, giving his writing an edge that blended irreverence, intelligence and emotional truth.

McGrath launched his TV writing career on Saturday Night Live, collaborating with comedy legends such as Chris Farley and Adam Sandler.

His sharp instincts and unique comedic tone soon earned him a spot on the writing team of The Simpsons.

There, he penned several standout episodes that helped cement the show’s status as a cultural phenomenon.

His work earned him an Emmy Award and the admiration of peers across the industry.

Beyond The Simpsons, McGrath contributed to popular animated series including Gravity Falls, Mission Hill, The PJs and King of the Hill.

His ability to blend satire with heart made him one of animation’s most respected writers.

His sister, Gail McGrath Garabedian, paid tribute to him in an emotional statement, calling him “one-of-a-kind” and praising his warmth and brilliance.

McGrath leaves behind his mother, two brothers, a sister, his sister-in-law, two nieces and a nephew.

His influence continues to resonate through the characters he shaped, the stories he elevated and the generations of writers who look to his work for inspiration.
