Women Borrowers Outpace Men In Loan Growth; Show Stronger Repayment Trends: CRIF Report

Women borrowers in India have surpassed men in terms of growth in active loans, according to a report by CRIF High Mark, released ahead of International Women’s Day.

The report also highlights that women have better repayment behavior compared to men.

As of December 2024, the number of women with active loans increased by 10.8% to 8.3 crore, outpacing the 6.5% growth recorded for men.

The report noted, “Women continue to outperform men, demonstrating better borrowing behavior with lower PAR 91-180 DPD (days past due) across most products, except for Gold Loans, Two-Wheeler loans.”

Significant improvements were observed in home loans, business loans, agricultural and tractor loans, property loans, and education loans.

Additionally, women showed better repayment trends in consumer durable loans, unlike their male counterparts.

The report also states that state-run lenders were more inclined to lend to women in 2024.

The total outstanding portfolio of women borrowers increased by 18% to Rs 36.5 lakh crore, with their overall share in total borrowers remaining stable at 24%.

Younger women (aged 35 years or below) accounted for the highest share of loan originations, though their total contribution slightly declined to 43.8% from 44.3% in 2022.

From a state-wise perspective, Maharashtra topped in various loan segments, including home loans, business loans, property loans, auto loans, credit cards, and education loans.
