UP Farmers Receive Max Benefit As Banana Exports Rise Tenfold In A Decade

Providing a significant boost to the nation’s agricultural exports, India has witnessed a tenfold rise in Banana exports in the past decade. A report on export statistics and future projections released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry highlighted the growth.

Banana cultivation has received proactive promotion as it was declared the one product of Kushinagar under One District One Product (ODOP).

Banana farmers have received subsidies as incentives to cultivate high-quality produce to meet market demand. Uttar Pradesh provides a subsidy of nearly 38,000 rupees per hectare for banana farming.

In UP’s Purvanchal and Awadh regions, districts like Kushinagar, Deoria, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Amethi, and Barabanki are extensively engaged in banana farming.

Increased acreage allotted to Banana cultivation and the adoption of superior varieties and advanced farming techniques have contributed to better yielding of the product and contributed to banana exports.

As a result, bananas from UP are in high demand, not only in major cities across the country but also in states like Bihar, Punjab, Delhi, and Jammu, as well as in Nepal.

Farmers involved in banana processing are also being provided exposure opportunities. For instance, a few farmers from Kushinagar recently participated in a trade show held in Noida a few months ago.

To ensure maximum benefits for India’s banana farmers, the Narendra Modi govt has proposed to organise a seller-buyer meet in Mumbai.

Additionally, bananas have been included in a pilot project by the central govt for the cost-effective export of two dozen fruits via sea routes, owing to their promising potential.
