Indian benchmark indices opened with limited movement on Wednesday as investors remained wary of rising oil prices and elevated bond yields in overseas markets.
The Sensex began the session at 77,218.05, losing 17.41 points, or 0.02 per cent. The Nifty opened at 24,152.05 after a decline of 2.85 points, equivalent to 0.01 per cent.
IT shares recorded the strongest performance among the major sectoral indices during early trading. The Nifty IT index climbed 0.82 per cent, while the Nifty MidSmall IT & Telecom index gained 0.59 per cent.
Realty-focused indices moved higher, with both Nifty Realty and Nifty REITS & Realty advancing by up to 0.2 per cent.
Several sectors, however, remained under pressure. The Nifty Metal index declined 0.35 per cent, while the Nifty Auto index slipped 0.14 per cent. The Nifty MidSmall Healthcare index dropped 0.10 per cent, while Nifty Pharma, Nifty Chemicals and Nifty500 Healthcare each fell 0.09 per cent.
Analysts linked the subdued market mood to the sharp rise in crude oil prices and increasing bond yields across global markets.
Renewed uncertainty surrounding the Middle East has lifted oil prices and raised inflation concerns.
Higher inflation risks could keep pressure on global bond yields, with US 30-year Treasury yields reaching their highest level since 2007.
India’s resilient economic fundamentals continued to offer some support to the market despite the challenging global environment.
Improved GDP expectations, stronger earnings prospects for FY27 and steady domestic liquidity could help Indian equities withstand external volatility.
Market experts said long-term investors could use periods of weakness to accumulate fundamentally strong growth stocks. They said mid- and small-cap segments continue to show healthy momentum.
Asian markets traded lower as semiconductor stocks remained under pressure.
Brent crude rose to nearly $92 a barrel, reaching its highest level in more than three weeks.
Tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire further heightened concerns about global energy supplies and financial markets.
