Stock Market Closing: Sensex Gains 333 Points, Nifty Adds 99 As FMCG, Realty And PSU Banks Lead Recovery

Indian stock markets ended Wednesday’s session in positive territory, recovering from a two-day decline as investors purchased FMCG, realty and public sector banking shares.

A moderation in crude oil prices ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy announcement provided support to sentiment.

The Sensex advanced 332.63 points, equivalent to 0.45 per cent, to settle at 74,336.45. The Nifty added 99 points, or 0.43 per cent, and finished at 23,217.60.

Analysts identified the 23,300–23,400 band as an important hurdle for the Nifty’s recovery.

According to market observers, the index would need to sustain a move above 23,500 to establish a stronger technical outlook.

“On the downside, the 23,100–23,070 zone remains the immediate support area, with a decisive break below 23,070 likely to intensify selling pressure and expose the index to the 23,000–22,800 region,” market watchers stated.

HDFC Life Insurance Company, ITC and SBI Life Insurance Company ranked among the leading gainers in the Nifty basket. Their gains contributed to the benchmark’s rise.

The broader market, however, showed limited strength. The Nifty MidCap index edged down 0.01 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap index declined 0.18 per cent.

FMCG, PSU Bank and Realty indices outperformed during the session.

The IT and Pharma segments recorded losses and emerged as the weakest performers among the major sectoral gauges.

Market participants continued to monitor the US central bank’s policy meeting. They paid particular attention to its interest-rate guidance and assessment of future economic conditions.

“Balanced commentary could support further recovery, while a hawkish outlook, renewed strength in bond yields or a move in Brent towards $110 could revive selling pressure and limit the market’s rebound,” market experts stated.

“Investors now await the Fed Chair’s commentary for deeper insight into the future rate trajectory, with the guidance expected to influence global liquidity conditions, capital flows and the near-term direction of financial markets,” analysts noted.
