Indian benchmark equity indices extended gains for the second straight session on Thursday as strong buying in pharmaceutical, healthcare, metal, and banking stocks lifted market sentiment.
Investors also reacted positively to expectations of policy measures aimed at controlling currency volatility and supporting capital inflows.
The Sensex advanced 789.74 points, or 1.06 per cent, to settle at 75,398.72. The Nifty, however, climbed 277 points, or 1.18 per cent, to close at 23,689.60.
During intra-day trade, the Sensex surged over 1,073 points to touch 75,681.88, while the Nifty reached a high of 23,777.20.
Markets witnessed sharp fluctuations during the session.
The 30-share index briefly slipped to 74,526.77, whereas the Nifty touched an intra-day low of 23,426.55 before recovering strongly.
Among sectoral performers, Nifty Pharma emerged as the biggest gainer with a rise of 2.74 per cent.
The Nifty Healthcare index advanced 2.56 per cent, while the Nifty Metal index gained 2.04 per cent.
Banking shares also traded firmly, with PSU Bank and Private Bank indices registering solid gains.
Conversely, IT stocks remained under pressure. Nifty IT declined 2 per cent amid weakness in leading technology counters, including Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech, and Tech Mahindra.
Market experts stated that optimism surrounding potential policy initiatives, easing tax rules for foreign bond investors, and expectations from the Trump-Xi meeting improved overall sentiment despite volatile crude prices and rupee fluctuations.
