Sensex, Nifty Trade With Strong Gains Over US Tariff Developments

Indian equity markets opened the week on a firm note, tracking positive global cues and improved investor sentiment after the US Supreme Court struck down tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump.

At 9.25 a.m., the BSE Sensex was up 563 points, or 0.68 per cent, at 83,375, while the Nifty 50 gained 170 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 25,741. Broader markets also advanced, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.12 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 climbing 0.86 per cent.

Most sectoral indices traded in positive territory, except Nifty IT, which slipped 0.10 per cent, and chemicals, down 0.26 per cent. Nifty PSU Bank led the gains with a 1.13 per cent rise, followed by Nifty Metal, up 0.77 per cent, and Nifty Auto, which gained 0.83 per cent.

Analysts noted that India’s trade negotiating team had delayed its visit to the US following the court ruling, calling the development positive but insufficient to spark a sustained rally.

Market experts placed immediate support for Nifty at 25,370, with resistance around 25,700. The index’s structure indicates stabilisation and gradual recovery after recent volatility, supported by buying at lower levels and an improving short-term outlook.

Global Cues And Institutional Flows

Bank Nifty rebounded strongly in the previous session, outperforming broader markets after earlier weakness. Support is seen between 60,800 and 60,900, while resistance is placed at 61,300–61,400.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.12 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 2.22 per cent, and South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.36 per cent. US markets ended mostly lower, with the Nasdaq down 0.16 per cent, the S&P 500 flat, and the Dow Jones slipping 0.13 per cent.

On February 20, foreign institutional investors net sold equities worth Rs 935 crore, while domestic institutional investors net bought Rs 2,637 crore.
