Domestic stock markets started on a flat note but soon moved higher, supported by lower global oil prices and a ceasefire announcement between Israel and Lebanon by US President Donald Trump.
The BSE Sensex opened at 77,976, slipping 12 points, while the Nifty 50 began the session with a gain of 30 points at 24,165.
The indices continued to trade in positive territory, with the Sensex rising by 142 points to 78,130 and the Nifty advancing 28 points to 24,224. Buying activity in FMCG, energy, and real estate stocks supported the gains.
HDFC Life, Wipro, Hindalco Industries, Bharti Airtel, and JSW Steel remained among the early underperformers.
The broader market outperformed the benchmarks, driven by strong gains in micro-cap and small-cap stocks. The Nifty Microcap 250 rose about 1 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 250 gained around 1 per cent.
Market sentiment improved after the ceasefire announcement between Israel and Lebanon, which indicated a potential easing of geopolitical tensions. Earlier signals had also suggested that the conflict could soon come to an end.
Oil prices declined, offering additional support to equities. Brent crude futures fell by up to 1.4 per cent to $97.99 per barrel, while US WTI crude dropped around 2 per cent to $92.91 per barrel.
Experts advised investors to remain cautious due to persistent global uncertainties and volatility.
“Initiating fresh long positions should ideally be deferred until the Nifty decisively breaks above and sustains the 24,500 level, which would signal improved sentiment and the potential for a more sustained bullish trend,” analysts said.
Global markets delivered mixed outcomes. The S&P 500 closed 0.26 per cent higher, and the Nasdaq Composite ended 0.36 per cent up. Asian markets such as the Nikkei 225, KOSPI, and Hang Seng Index traded lower.
Foreign institutional investors continued buying for the second consecutive session, purchasing equities worth ₹382 crore. In contrast, domestic institutional investors booked profits by selling shares worth over ₹3,400 crore.
Easing oil prices and improving geopolitical developments supported the markets in the short term. Analysts expect volatility to persist, with investors closely tracking global developments and key technical levels.
