Sensex, Nifty End In Green As Heavy Buying Sparks Final-Hour Surge

Indian equity markets staged a strong comeback in the final hour of trade on Monday, led by heavy buying in major stocks.

Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, and HDFC Bank attracted significant investor interest.

The Sensex recovered sharply from an intra-day low of 80,387.25. It climbed 1,345 points to touch a high of 81,732 before closing at 81,666, marking a gain of 944 points or 1.17 per cent.

The Nifty also moved in a broad range. After dipping to 24,679, it surged to 25,108 and finally settled at 25,088, rising 263 points or 1.06 per cent.

The rebound followed the sharpest Budget-day fall since February 2020.

Midcap and smallcap stocks also participated in the rally, showing a broad-based recovery.

Investor sentiment improved as reflected in the India VIX, which slipped 8 per cent during the session.

Power Grid led the Sensex gains, surging 7.6 per cent after the company confirmed that its capital expenditure and capitalisation plans for FY26 remained on track, and it expected to exceed annual guidance.

Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, Mahindra & Mahindra, L&T, IndiGo, and UltraTech Cement led the gains.

Asian Paints, ITC, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, and SBI also rose, with increases up to 4.6 per cent.

Only six Sensex constituents closed in the red: Axis Bank, Infosys, TCS, Trent, Titan, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Broader markets supported the rally. The Nifty Midcap index rose 0.9 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap index added 0.6 per cent.

Sectorally, the Nifty Auto index gained 2.14 per cent, the Nifty Metal 1.8 per cent, and the Nifty Realty 1.6 per cent. The Nifty IT index fell 0.5 per cent, the only sectoral loser.

In commodities, MCX Silver futures dropped 6.4 per cent to Rs 2,48,600 per kilogram. Gold prices stabilised, with MCX Gold futures down 0.1 per cent to Rs 1,47,600 per 10 grams.
