Railways Reaches 99% Electrification; Final Stretch Nears Completion

Indian Railways has almost completed its ambitious plan to switch from diesel to electric power.

Nearly the entire broad-gauge network, 99 per cent, is now powered by electric traction, leaving just around 700 kilometres pending.

The final segments are set to finish ahead of March 2026.

This is a huge milestone. Of roughly 70,000 km of tracks, just a few stretches are yet to be electrified, primarily in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Assam.

Once done, India will operate the world’s largest fully electrified railway system.

Moreover, Trains that have recently switched to electric engines are operating faster and more consistently, with fewer hold-ups and reduced expenses.

Passengers can feel the change—quieter coaches and smoother journeys make the difference evident. For the Railways, it means big savings on fuel and maintenance.

There is also a green dividend. Cutting diesel use on such a large scale will slash emissions by millions of tonnes each year.

Alongside, the network is adding solar and wind projects to power stations, strengthening the shift toward renewable energy.

Carrying more than two crore people every day, the Railways is often described as the country’s lifeline.

Now, with near-total electrification, it is also becoming a symbol of India’s clean energy push.

The final one per cent may be small on paper, but finishing it will mark the beginning of a new chapter in sustainable transport.
