ONDC Pincode by PhonePe Crosses 5,000 Daily Order Mark, Streamlining E-commerce Transactions

The ONDC app developed by PhonePe, it is currently fulfilling more than 5,000 daily orders, and has been downloaded over 50,000 times across the Play Store and App Store, according to Pincode.

Currently restricted to Bengaluru, Pincode is primarily utilized for groceries and food deliveries. While details on the category-wise distribution of the 5,000 daily orders were not disclosed, it is estimated that grocery orders constitute a significant majority, around 60-65%, with food deliveries comprising a smaller portion.

Pincode, the seller app on PhonePe’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), has achieved a significant milestone by fulfilling over 5,000 orders per day and garnering 50,000 downloads across both app stores. The popularity of ONDC in cities, particularly Bengaluru, has been growing steadily, with Magicpin, another seller app on the network, processing 10,000 orders daily. However, order volumes have declined from the peak of 25,000 as the initial discounts were reduced.

Pincode, the ONDC app by PhonePe, offers an array of products in six major categories such as grocery, food, pharma, electronics, home decor, and fashion. Although presently confined to Bengaluru, Pincode has plans to expand its services to other cities in the upcoming weeks; however, it does not intend to initiate operations in more than 10 cities during its initial year. The app allows customers to explore stores by browsing categories and create multiple carts with one active cart per store. Additionally, they can save multiple carts for future use.

Lalit Singh, the General Manager at Pincode, expressed his excitement over the rapid expansion of the Pincode app and its growing popularity among consumers. He also stated that Pincode is dedicated to improving the user’s shopping experience by introducing additional categories and expanding its selection of stores within the app.

PhonePe, a subsidiary of Walmart, introduced Pincode, a distinct app designed to integrate with the open network. Following this, Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, stated his intention to request that ONDC CEO T Koshy exclude apps that do not arrive on the network with their primary platforms, potentially indicating the Pincode and/or Axis Bank, which also launched dedicated apps for ONDC.

The minister further emphasized that launching a distinct app for ONDC would enable businesses to benefit from the network’s sellers but deprive their consumer base of the opportunity to choose from a range of sellers.

Ensuring consumers have the freedom to choose from a variety of sellers is especially critical due to the government’s objective of raising e-commerce penetration in the country to 25% within the next two years. This goal will result in 900 million buyers and 1.2 million sellers utilizing the ONDC network, resulting in a gross merchandise value of $48 billion.
