Meta’s First India Data Center at Reliance Campus: Zuckerberg Talks at Ambani-Merchant Gala

According to the Source, Meta is poised to establish its inaugural data center in India at the Reliance Industries campus in Chennai. This move aims to foster local content generation for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms. Sources revealed that discussions during the pre-wedding festivities of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in early March at Jamnagar led to the finalization of the deal between Meta and Reliance. Although the financial specifics remain undisclosed.

With this development, Meta is set to operate four to five nodes across various Indian locations, facilitating expedited data processing. Currently, Meta’s Indian user data is managed from its Singapore data center. However, a local data center in India promises improved localized advertisements, enhancing user engagement and reducing transmission costs.

The proposed 10-acre campus in Chennai’s Ambattur Industrial Estate is a joint venture between Brookfield Asset Management, Reliance Industries, and Digital Realty. It boasts a potential 100-megawatt (MW) IT load capacity.

Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint Research, stated, “Meta’s objective would be to establish greenfield data centers in strategic regions like Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR, adequately meeting its robust infrastructure demands spanning from fiber to power.”

Shah further emphasized the significance of localizing user-generated content and advertisements in India, given its vast user base, coupled with underpenetration in terms of installed smartphone users, nearing 850 million. This localization strategy promises reduced latency, enhanced AI-driven recommendations, and savings on transmission costs incurred from distant hubs like Singapore.
