Markets Slide After US President Donald Trump’s Iran Warning

Global financial markets experienced notable turbulence on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump warned that military action against Iran could continue for several weeks, prompting fears of supply disruptions and extended economic uncertainty.

US stock futures fell in response, with S&P 500 futures down roughly 0.8 per cent, Nasdaq futures dropping around 1 per cent, and Dow futures falling approximately 350 points, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and CNBC.

Asian markets reflected similar unease: South Korea’s Kospi slid over 2 per cent, while Japan’s Nikkei declined amid investor concerns over energy supply stability.

Oil prices surged as traders reacted to Trump’s warning that the United States would strike Iran ‘extremely hard over the next two to three weeks’ if no deal is reached.

The global benchmark, Brent crude, rose over 3 per cent during and after his remarks, surpassing $105 per barrel in Asian trading.

Investors had anticipated signals of de-escalation or clearer exit strategies. Instead, even as Trump suggested the war was nearing completion, he indicated further military operations, heightening uncertainty over timelines.

Markets remain focused on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil shipments affected during the conflict.

Analysts warned that ongoing disruption in this vital waterway could tighten global supply and sustain elevated oil prices.

A report by Oxford Economics, cited by The New York Times, estimated a 10 per cent shortfall in global oil supply versus demand, raising the risk of ‘widespread rationing’ and supply chain pressures, particularly in emerging economies.

Rising energy costs are also fuelling inflation concerns. US gasoline prices have surpassed $4 per gallon, increasing pressure on households and businesses.
