Markets Open Lower As Global Uncertainty Weighs On Sentiment

Indian equity benchmarks opened marginally lower on Wednesday morning as investors remained cautious over escalating geopolitical developments and renewed concerns over tariffs, reflecting mixed signals from other Asian markets.

At around 9:30 AM, the BSE Sensex was down by 156 points, or 0.18 per cent, at 84,907, while the Nifty 50 slipped 54 points, or 0.21 per cent, to trade at 26,124.

Broader markets, however, moved independently of the frontline indices.

The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.22 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.25 per cent.

On the sectoral front, the auto pack underperformed, with Nifty Auto declining 0.49 per cent.

In contrast, consumer durables, information technology and metal stocks advanced by 1.15 per cent, 0.91 per cent and 0.53 per cent, respectively.

Key Technical Levels

Market participants identified immediate support for the Nifty in the 26,000–26,050 range, while resistance is seen between 26,300 and 26,350.

Analysts noted that recent trading sessions have lacked a clear directional trend, with a handful of large stocks exerting an outsized influence on index movement. They pointed out that despite positive institutional inflows, the Nifty closed 71 points lower in the previous session due to sharp declines in just two heavyweight stocks.

The unusually high volumes in both derivatives and the cash segment for these stocks suggested settlement-related activity, which analysts described as technical in nature rather than driven by fundamentals.

Looking ahead, experts cautioned that markets could see heightened volatility, with developments linked to US President Donald Trump remaining a key trigger.

Investors are also closely tracking the US Supreme Court’s decision on Trump-era tariffs, with an unfavourable verdict on reciprocal tariffs expected to cause sharp swings in global markets.

Across Asia, equity markets traded on a mixed note, with defence-related stocks snapping a two-day rally.

Sentiment was influenced by geopolitical tensions following a US strike on Venezuela and renewed political rhetoric concerning Greenland.

In regional markets, China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.29 per cent, and the Shenzhen Component Index gained 0.35 per cent.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.64 per cent, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index declined 1.01 per cent. South Korea’s Kospi advanced 1.18 per cent.

Overnight in the US, markets ended higher, with the Nasdaq Composite rising 0.65 per cent.

The S&P 500 gained 0.62 per cent, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.99 per cent.

On January 6, foreign institutional investors were net sellers of equities worth 106 crore rupees, while domestic institutional investors purchased shares worth 1,749 crore rupees on a net basis.
