The ongoing Maha Kumbh has emerged as one of India’s most significant economic events, generating over Rs 3 lakh crore ($360 billion) in trade. This extraordinary economic contribution highlights the growing intersection of faith and economy in the country, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).
Praveen Khandelwal, CAIT General Secretary and Member of Parliament, emphasized the scale of commercial activity during the event.
He noted that the massive economic impact of Maha Kumbh demonstrates how spiritual tourism and religious gatherings play a crucial role in driving India’s economic growth.
Originally, organizers expected the Maha Kumbh to attract 40 crore devotees and generate around Rs 2 lakh crore in trade. However, the overwhelming enthusiasm from across the country has led to a significant increase in estimates, with the number of visitors now expected to reach 60 crore.
As a result, the projected economic impact has surpassed Rs 3 lakh crore, according to CAIT.

The Maha Kumbh has provided a substantial economic boost to various sectors, including tourism, food and beverage, transport and logistics, religious items, traditional clothing, handicrafts, healthcare and wellness services, media, advertising, and entertainment.
The event’s influence extends far beyond the gathering itself, creating a ripple effect across the economy.
While Prayagraj, the host city, has experienced a surge in economic activity, the economic benefits have spread beyond the city. CAIT reported that towns and cities within a 150 km radius of Prayagraj also experienced significant increases in business activity. Additionally, religious hubs such as Ayodhya and Varanasi witnessed a rise in pilgrim numbers, further strengthening their local economies.
To support the seamless organization of Maha Kumbh, the Uttar Pradesh government has invested Rs 7,500 crore in infrastructure development in Prayagraj. This investment includes improvements to roads, flyovers, and underpasses. Of this amount, Rs 1,500 crore was specifically allocated for preparations related to the Maha Kumbh.
The economic impact of the ongoing event underscores the immense potential of religious tourism and the pivotal role it plays in contributing to India’s overall economic growth.
