Made-In-India Car Models Find Greater Success In Global Exports Surpass Domestic Sales

India’s automotive industry, one of the largest in the world, is witnessing a notable shift as several car Models manufactured in the country are now performing better in global markets than at home.

In FY25, six car models, Honda City, Honda Elevate, Nissan Sunny, Nissan Magnite, Hyundai Verna, and Jeep Meridian, recorded higher export volumes than domestic sales, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Global Export Markets Outpace Domestic Demand

Originally tailored for Indian consumers, these vehicles have found stronger demand abroad.

Carmakers are responding to tepid local interest by ramping up exports and capitalising on their global manufacturing capabilities.

The trend reflects both subdued domestic demand and the appeal of Indian-made vehicles in overseas markets.

Honda Elevate Gains Ground In Japan

Honda launched the Elevate in September 2023, targeting India’s growing SUV segment.

However, underwhelming local sales led the company to pivot toward international markets.

In FY25, Honda exported 45,167 units of the Elevate, more than double the 22,321 units sold domestically.

This marks a reversal from FY24, when Honda sold 33,642 units locally and exported just 10,273 units.

Honda ramped up Elevate production by 54% to 67,488 units in FY25.

Exports became vital to maintaining manufacturing volumes and meeting supplier obligations.

The car, rebadged as the WR-V, found a strong market in Japan and other countries.

Hyundai Verna Finds Success In Global Markets

Hyundai reintroduced the Verna in 2023 to revive interest in sedans in India, where SUVs continue to dominate.

Despite the facelift and marketing push, domestic demand remained limited.

Hyundai responded by increasing exports, leveraging its robust global distribution network.

In FY25, Hyundai exported over 50,000 units of the Verna to regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, where the model performed significantly better than in India.

Nissan Magnite’s Global Rise

Nissan launched the Magnite in 2020 as an affordable SUV for Indian buyers. While it initially gained traction, domestic sales began to dip in FY25. Nissan adjusted its focus and expanded exports.

The company sold 27,881 units of the Magnite in India in FY25, while exports climbed to 29,155 units, nearly matching domestic volumes.

In comparison, FY24 saw 30,146 units sold locally and 9,314 units exported.

Nissan increased Magnite production to 57,036 units to support growing global demand.

India’s Export Strategy Strengthens Auto Industry Resilience

With global markets showing stronger demand for select Indian-made vehicles, automakers are increasingly relying on exports to maintain production and profitability.

This shift highlights the flexibility of India’s auto manufacturing sector and its growing importance as a global export hub.
