In a significant achievement for India’s growing aerospace manufacturing sector, Lockheed Martin and Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) have rolled out the 250th indigenously produced C-130J Super Hercules tail assembly.
The milestone further consolidates India’s role as a key contributor to the global supply chain of the widely used military transport aircraft.
TLMAL, a joint venture established in 2010 by Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Lockheed Martin, is responsible for producing the full empennage of the C-130J. This includes the complete tail structure along with the horizontal and vertical stabilisers.
Every empennage manufactured in India is fitted onto all new Super Hercules aircraft delivered worldwide.
Rod McLean, vice president for Air Mobility & Maritime Missions at Lockheed Martin, stated that this achievement underscores the strength of the company’s partnership with the Indian industry.
He emphasised that the collaboration reflects mutual commitment to advanced manufacturing, quality assurance, and specialised workforce development.
The empennage programme forms an integral part of India’s ‘Make in India’ drive, enhancing domestic industrial capabilities while supporting Lockheed Martin’s international production requirements.
The C-130J-30 variant serves the Indian Air Force across multiple operational roles.
India received its first aircraft in 2011, using the platform for tasks such as humanitarian assistance, transport, special operations, and disaster relief.
Globally, the C-130J fleet operates across 23 countries, with more than 560 aircraft collectively logging over three million flight hours. Their missions range from airlift and medical evacuation to refuelling and search-and-rescue operations.
The latest delivery from TLMAL highlights India’s expanding footprint in the defence aerospace ecosystem and demonstrates the increasing sophistication and reliability of indigenous industrial partnerships.
