Jio Platforms is exploring international opportunities to expand its technology business, with the potential to reach an additional 1.5 billion users through around 12 strategic partnerships.
Managing Director Akash Ambani outlined the company’s global ambitions while responding to a question during an interaction with brokers from across India in Mumbai ahead of Jio’s initial public offering (IPO).
The company is exploring opportunities in developed markets such as the United States and Germany, alongside East Asia, South America and Africa.
Jio has previously discussed expanding its international business and taking its in-house technology stack to overseas markets.
Akash Ambani’s latest remarks provide a clearer indication of the potential scale of these plans.
The company does not intend to become a direct telecom operator in these countries. Instead, it plans to partner with local operators and provide its technology platforms.
Jio sees its integrated home broadband technology stack as a major opportunity.
Akash Ambani said developing technology and deploying it successfully at scale require different capabilities, adding that Jio has demonstrated both in India. He indicated that opportunities exist in developed markets, where the current state of fibre broadband deployment could create scope for new technology solutions.
Jio’s global ambitions could support India’s transition from a major technology consumer to an exporter of home-grown solutions.
The company aims to take technology developed in India to international markets, drawing on its experience of deploying services at scale domestically.
Beyond home broadband, 5G could become another important component of its international strategy.
Jio is assessing markets according to individual countries’ requirements. If the proposed partnerships materialise, they could open new overseas revenue streams for Jio.
