India’s Renewable Energy Capacity Triples To 232 GW; Solar Power Leads The Growth

India’s renewable energy capacity has seen a remarkable rise, growing from 75 GW in March 2014 to 232 GW in 2025, according to a report by PTI.

This growth is largely driven by solar power, which has increased from 2.8 GW in 2014 to 108 GW in 2025. The total includes additions from hydropower as well.

India’s wind energy capacity has also more than doubled in the last ten years.

In 2014, wind power stood at 21 GW. By 2025, it had reached 51 GW. Alongside, India’s solar module manufacturing industry has grown significantly.

The report states that the country’s module production capacity rose from 2 GW to 90 GW in the same period.

The scale of growth in manufacturing has kept pace with installations, driven by policy incentives and rising domestic demand.

Ambitious Targets & Global Ranking

India has set a target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

To meet this goal, the country must add 50 GW of green energy annually. In 2024, it managed to install 25 GW—half the required yearly amount.

However, the annual growth rate has improved by 34 per cent, compared to 18.5 GW in the previous year.

India is also ramping up solar cell and wafer production. The current capacity stands at 25 GW for solar cells and 2 GW for wafers. By 2030, these are targeted to rise to 100 GW and 40 GW, respectively.

Meanwhile, India has overtaken Germany to become the third-largest solar and wind power producer in the world.
