India’s coal production saw a notable increase in November 2024, growing by 7.2% to reach 90.62 million tonnes (MT) compared to 84.52 MT in the same month last year, the Ministry of Coal reported on Sunday.
Coal production from captive and other entities has made notable strides, totaling 17.13 MT in November 2024, compared to 12.44 MT in November 2023. This reflects a robust growth of 37.69 percent, per the ministry’s statement.
For the fiscal year 2024-25, cumulative coal production up to November totaled 628.03 MT, reflecting a 6.21% increase from 591.32 MT in the previous year.
Coal dispatches also showed steady progress in November 2024, reaching 85.22 MT, a 3.85% increase from 82.07 MT in November 2023.
Dispatches from captive and other entities grew sharply by 25.73%, reaching 16.58 MT in November 2024, up from 13.19 MT in November 2023.
Cumulative coal dispatches for FY 2024-25 reached 657.75 MT, reflecting a growth of 5.45% from 623.78 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24.
The Ministry also successfully auctioned nine coal mines this week as part of the 10th round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions.
The mines, which are likely to generate an annual revenue of Rs 1,446 crore (excluding partially explored mines), will likely attract Rs 2,115 crore in capital investments and create over 19,000 jobs.
These mines hold a combined geological reserve of 3,998.73 million tonnes, with a cumulative Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of 14.10 MTPA, excluding partially explored mines.
Three of the coal mines are located in Jharkhand, with two each in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
On 21 June 2024, the Ministry of Coal initiated the 10th round of coal mine auctions for commercial mining. The forward auctions saw the successful auctioning of nine coal mines, including three fully explored and six partially explored mines.
