Indian Markets End 2025 On Firm Note; Sensex, Nifty Open Higher

Mumbai witnessed a positive start on Wednesday as the Indian stock market wrapped up the final trading day of 2025.

The Sensex rose 167 points, or 0.20 per cent, to 84,872, while the Nifty climbed 67 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 26,005 in early trade.

The momentum extended beyond benchmark indices, with the Nifty Midcap 100 advancing 0.55 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.58 per cent.

Sectoral trends saw the Nifty Metal index emerge as the top gainer with a 1.33 per cent rise, followed by Nifty Chemicals at 1.09 per cent and Nifty PSU Bank at 0.79 per cent.

Analysts identified immediate support for the Nifty at the 25,750–25,800 zone, while resistance levels were placed near 26,050–26,100.

Although the market shows potential for further gains, sustained selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and the absence of fresh triggers, such as news on US-India trade developments, could weigh on momentum.

Market participants are closely monitoring December auto sales data, third-quarter corporate earnings, budget expectations, and potential actions by the US Federal Reserve in 2026.

Traders remain optimistic that corporate earnings will recover in the coming year, providing support to equities.

Asian Markets Trade Lower in Holiday-Shortened Session

In the broader Asia-Pacific region, markets mostly fell during the morning session on the holiday-shortened trading day.

China’s Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.07 per cent, Shenzhen fell 0.67 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei declined 0.37 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index lost 1.12 per cent, and South Korea’s Kospi eased 0.15 per cent.

The previous day, US markets ended in the red, with Nasdaq down 0.24 per cent, the S&P 500 easing 0.14 per cent, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 0.2 per cent.

On December 30, FIIs offloaded equities worth Rs 3,844 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers at Rs 6,160 crore.

Investors and traders are entering the new year cautiously, balancing year-end optimism with global market headwinds and the anticipation of fresh economic indicators.
