Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the death of renowned advertising icon Piyush Pandey, describing him as the man who gave Indian advertising its ‘swadeshi swagger’.
Pandey, aged 70, passed away after ‘battling an infection that took a serious turn’, according to Ogilvy, the global advertising agency where he served as Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer Worldwide.
Taking to X, the Adani Group Chairman posted, “Piyush Pandey was far more than just an advertising legend. He was the voice that made India believe in its own story. He gave Indian advertising its self-confidence, its soul, its “swadeshi” swagger.”
The industrialist, recalling his personal connection with Pandey, added, “Like a master batsman, he played every stroke with his heart. Today, India has lost a true son.”
Pranav Adani, Director of Adani Enterprises, also mourned Pandey’s passing, describing him as a ‘dear friend’ and ‘creative genius’.
“Devastated by the passing of my very dear friend Piyush Pandey, the creative genius who shaped Indian advertising into a global powerhouse. His ideas were the industry’s benchmarks and have inspired generations of storytellers. Will sorely miss his warmth and wit. Om Shanti,” he posted.
Over his illustrious career, Pandey created campaigns that became part of India’s cultural fabric.
Among his celebrated works are ‘Kuch Khaas Hai Zindagi Mein’, ‘Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai’, and the beloved ‘ZooZoo’ characters that captured public imagination.
He also led memorable public awareness initiatives, including the ‘Do Boond Zindagi Ke’ Polio Abhiyaan featuring Amitabh Bachchan. The campaign left a lasting impact on public health communication in India.
Piyush Pandey’s legacy endures through his family and his colleagues, who became an extended family. Moreover, his timeless creativity continues to shape the voice and identity of Indian advertising.
