Government Terminates Subramanian’s IMF Tenure Ahead Of Scheduled End

The Indian government has sacked Krishnamurthy V Subramanian as Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The termination took effect immediately, according to an order dated April 30.

Subramanian took charge in November 2022. He was due to complete his three-year term in November 2025. The government did not give any reason for the early exit.

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the termination. Subramanian had represented India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bhutan at the IMF.

Neither the Finance Ministry, the IMF, nor Subramanian responded to media queries.

Subramanian served as India’s 17th Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) from 2018 to 2021, and was the youngest to hold that role.

Top journals like The Journal of Financial Economics and The Review of Financial Studies have published his work.

In 2023, he wrote India@100: Envisioning Tomorrow’s Economic Powerhouse.

He replaced economist Surjit S Bhalla at the IMF. The ACC had appointed him for three years, starting November 1, 2022.
