Following a meeting with the Indian Prime Minister in Washington, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai revealed that the company intends to establish an operation centre at GIFT City in Gujarat. Pichai also highlighted that Google continues to make investments in India through its $10 billion India Digitization Fund. During the meeting, the Prime Minister engaged with various CEOs, including Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and AMD’s Lisa Su, in addition to Pichai.
Pichai expressed his enthusiasm for India’s progress, particularly emphasizing the vision of Digital India and the economic opportunities it brings. He mentioned Google’s ongoing investment in the India digitization fund, including support for companies focused on artificial intelligence. Pichai also mentioned Google’s 100-language initiative, which aims to bring chatbots to more Indian languages in the near future. He praised the Prime Minister’s “Digital India” plan as an innovative blueprint that other countries are looking to emulate.
In a tweet, the Ministry of External Affairs disclosed that Prime Minister Modi invited Google CEO Sundar Pichai to explore collaboration opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, and mobile device manufacturing in India. The tweet further highlighted discussions on fostering partnerships between Google and academic institutions in India to promote research and skill development.
Back in July 2020, Google announced its plan to invest $10 billion in India over the next five to seven years, aiming to accelerate the adoption of digital services in this significant global market. During his visit to India in December of the same year, Pichai confirmed that one-fourth of the $300 million India Digitization Fund would be allocated to companies led by women.
