From Trainee Programmer To Tata Sons Chairman: The Remarkable Journey Of N Chandrasekaran

N Chandrasekaran began his professional journey at Tata Consultancy Services in 1987 after completing a master’s degree in computer science.

At the time, Chandrasekaran had no prominent family background or established business legacy. Still, his problem-solving abilities would eventually take him to the top of one of India’s largest business groups.

After joining TCS as a trainee programmer, Chandrasekaran steadily gained experience across technology delivery, sales, operations and international business. He became known for building strong client relationships and understanding customer requirements across global markets.

Chandrasekaran took charge as TCS Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director in 2009, during the global financial crisis.

With technology spending under pressure, Chandrasekaran chose expansion rather than retrenchment. He diversified TCS across markets and strengthened its presence in consulting, analytics, cloud computing and digital services.

During his leadership, annual revenue crossed $10 billion in 2012, while digital operations became an increasingly important growth engine.

TCS strengthened its global footprint, expanded its workforce and enhanced its technology capabilities.

The company repeatedly ranked among India’s most valuable listed businesses during his tenure.

Chandrasekaran became Chairman of Tata Sons in January 2017 following the removal of Cyrus Mistry. His appointment marked a historic moment as he became the first professional executive and first non-Parsi to lead the group.

Chandrasekaran subsequently promoted his ‘One Tata’ approach, seeking greater cooperation and synergies among the group’s diverse companies.

Under his leadership, Tata expanded its focus on electric vehicles, semiconductors, batteries, renewable energy, electronics manufacturing, aviation and digital businesses.

Chandrasekaran’s tenure has therefore centred on preparing the conglomerate for emerging industries while preserving the group’s long-term business philosophy.

An enthusiastic marathon runner, Chandrasekaran has often approached leadership with similar patience and consistency. His journey from a trainee programmer to Tata Sons Chairman reflects how sustained performance, strategic thinking and long-term vision can shape an extraordinary career.
