FedEx and Adani Break Ground On Automated Cargo Hub At NMIA

FedEx, in partnership with Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, has broken ground on a fully automated air cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

The project advances capacity in India’s largest international trade corridor and strengthens Western India’s role as an integrated logistics gateway.

FedEx will commit over ₹2,500 crore as a long-term investment to develop the proposed 300,000 square foot facility.

The hub will operate as a regional consolidation and redistribution centre, linking India with Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe and the United States.

The development aligns with Adani’s strategy to position NMIA as a multimodal trade and aviation platform.

The foundation ceremony took place in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Raj Subramaniam, Richard Smith, Kami Viswanathan and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, also attended the ceremony.

Advanced Cargo Infrastructure

Jeet Adani stated that NMIA’s proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors and multimodal transport networks enhances Maharashtra’s global trade competitiveness.

He emphasised that the integrated infrastructure will support high-growth export sectors and reinforce the state’s logistics leadership.

Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, addressed the gathering.

She asserted that India’s global trade strength depends on efficient and reliable logistics systems.

Kami said the NMIA hub integrates FedEx’s global network with India’s fastest-growing trade corridor, ensuring speed, predictability and operational efficiency.

The facility will deploy advanced automated sorting technology, dimensional scanning, rapid security screening and dedicated aircraft parking bays.

It will process inbound and outbound consignments simultaneously.

It will improve routing flexibility and reduce transit uncertainty, particularly for electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and perishables.

The development will also strengthen MSME export capabilities and lower logistics costs.

NMIA will begin with an annual cargo capacity of 0.5 million metric tonnes, scaling to approximately 3.25 MMT in subsequent phases.

The greenfield airport project underscores Adani’s long-term vision of building world-class aviation and logistics infrastructure anchored in global supply chains.
