Dharavi Redevelopment To Transform Mithi River With Green-Blue Network

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project will place the rejuvenation of the Mithi River at the heart of its new green-blue network. The initiative aims to improve the environment and create healthier public spaces across one of Mumbai’s most densely populated neighbourhoods.

According to the project plan, the redevelopment will integrate a restored riverfront, parks, tree-lined corridors and open spaces into a continuous ecological network.

The initiative aims to improve air quality, reduce urban temperatures, strengthen biodiversity and expand access to green public spaces.

As part of the project, the authorities will rejuvenate around 40,000 trees in phases within Dharavi. They will also plant nearly two lakh compensatory trees across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

The redevelopment includes a key feature: a 3.3-km public promenade along the rejuvenated Mithi River. The promenade will extend from the Matunga culvert to the Mithi riverfront.

The promenade will include viewing decks, cafes and cultural spaces while preserving the river’s ecological character. It will also connect with a wider network comprising a 15-metre-wide Green Spine, Central Park and neighbourhood parks.

Project officials informed the Tree Authority that the number of trees to be rejuvenated and planted within Dharavi is nearly five times the number proposed to be cut for redevelopment.

Compensatory plantation is being carried out in Palghar tehsil, where 30,000 trees have already been planted, with a target of planting 75,000 trees during the current monsoon.

Environmental consultancy Terracon has been appointed to undertake the plantation and maintain the trees for five years.
