Deendayal Port Authority Inaugurates India’s First ‘Make In India’ 1 MW Green Hydrogen Plant

Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) has commissioned the country’s first ‘Make in India’ one megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant at its Kandla port, marking a pioneering achievement in sustainable maritime energy.

This facility is the initial phase of a larger 10 MW project, which, once completed, will position DPA at the forefront of India’s green energy transition within port operations.

Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal officially inaugurated the plant, lauding it as a ‘new benchmark’ for green hydrogen projects in India.

He praised DPA for showcasing exceptional speed, scale, and skill in realising the project.

The entire facility was constructed in just four months and is completely indigenous, highlighting India’s growing self-reliance in renewable technologies.

Indigenous Technology and Engineering Excellence

The plant uses an electrolyser wholly manufactured in India, and Indian engineers led the project.

The green hydrogen produced will initially power 11 buses and street lighting within the port premises.

This not only supports clean energy use but also demonstrates practical applications of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel alternative.

DPA Chairman SK Singh said they will add an additional 5 MW capacity by the end of the current fiscal year and expect to make the full 10 MW facility operational by mid-next fiscal year.

Once fully operational, the plant will produce approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, significantly contributing to maritime decarbonisation.

In an official statement, DPA emphasised that it has become the first port in India to operationalise a Make in India green hydrogen facility of this scale.

This milestone enhances India’s position as a global leader in sustainable port operations, paving the way for cleaner and more energy-efficient maritime logistics.

Green hydrogen has a wide range of applications, including powering vehicles, tugs, vessels, and even power plants.

By adopting this technology, DPA is reducing its carbon footprint and setting an example for other ports and industries in India.

Prime Minister Modi’s Support

The foundation stone for the green hydrogen plant was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 26 May during his visit to Bhuj, reflecting the central government’s commitment to promoting clean energy initiatives in key infrastructure sectors.

With the commissioning of this pioneering green hydrogen plant, Deendayal Port Authority is spearheading the move towards sustainable, low-carbon port operations.

This initiative aligns with India’s broader climate goals and promises to create a replicable model for other ports to follow, supporting the country’s vision for a greener and more energy-resilient future.
