Bharti Airtel has strongly refuted claims of a significant data breach after reports surfaced alleging that personal information of 375 million Indian users was being offer for sale on the dark web.
In a statement addressing the allegations, Airtel denounced the accusations as baseless and aimed at damaging the company’s reputation.
An Airtel spokesperson stated, “We categorically deny any breach of Airtel’s systems. These claims are nothing but a desperate attempt to tarnish Airtel’s reputation by vested interests.”
Unverified reports had suggested that sensitive details including phone numbers, email addresses, residential addresses, dates of birth, father’s names, and even Aadhaar numbers of Airtel users were purportedly available for purchase on underground platforms.
A thorough investigation conducted by Airtel concluded that there was no evidence to substantiate the alleged breach.
The company remains steadfast in assuring its customers about the security and integrity of their personal data.
According to information from Dark Web Informer on X, a threat actor identified as ‘xenZen’ was reportedly attempting to sell the data of Airtel users on a forum known as BreachForums.
The price set by the threat actor to sell the information was $50,000.
Meanwhile, Airtel’s response underscores its commitment to cybersecurity and protecting customer information amidst increasingly sophisticated threats in the digital landscape.
The telecommunications giant further reiterated its adherence to stringent security protocols and assured customers of continuous monitoring and proactive measures to safeguard against potential data breaches.
Airtel has urged customers to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts or scams and to report any suspicious activities immediately to the company’s dedicated customer service channels.
