Apple’s growing presence in India has created nearly 20,000 jobs so far, thanks to the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme aimed at boosting local manufacturing.
According to DigiTimes Asia, the Apple supply chain shift to India would have generated even more employment if not for the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Apple’s major suppliers—Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron—entered India under the PLI program with specific hiring targets.
If they achieve their commitments, Foxconn and Wistron are expected to add 23,000 jobs each by the end of March 2022.
These hiring goals were part of the conditions for receiving PLI subsidies.
Wistron had nearly 10,000 workers in India before a violent worker protest at its plant in December 2020 forced the company to suspend operations and restructure its management systems.
This incident temporarily slowed down its hiring momentum.
Pegatron, another key Apple supplier, planned to hire 6,000–7,000 employees in India by March 2022.
However, its operations had not yet begun as of early 2021, with the company still finalizing the location of its production facility.
Between 2018 and 2020, the number of Apple suppliers operating in India rose from six to nine.
This increase indicates a growing trend of Apple’s partners moving their supply chains to India, aligning with the government’s push to make the country a global manufacturing hub.
Apple also announced in March that it would start producing the iPhone 12 in India.
The company began manufacturing in India with the iPhone SE in 2017 and now assembles advanced models such as the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone 12 locally.
The Apple supply chain shift to India reflects the country’s rising importance in global electronics manufacturing and its success in attracting tech giants through targeted incentives.
