Ambuja Cements Selected For First Indo-Swedish CCU Pilot In Cement Industry

Ambuja Cements, a key company within the Adani Portfolio, has been chosen for the first Indo-Swedish Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) pilot in the global cement industry.

The company has secured an Indo-Swedish grant for a pre-pilot Technology Feasibility Study, undertaken in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Eco Tech, Sweden.

In its official statement, Ambuja Cements confirmed that it is the first cement manufacturer to receive this grant for a CCU feasibility project.

The study will explore scalable and sustainable CO₂ capture and utilisation technologies, marking a shift from conventional carbon storage to a circular carbon economy.

This transition aims to reduce emissions while enabling the creation of new green materials and fuels.

Under the project, Ambuja plans to convert captured CO₂ into value-added products such as calcium carbonate or green methanol through green hydrogen pathways.

This approach seeks to repurpose carbon for industrial use, aligning economic development with environmental responsibility.

Assessing Feasibility for Hard-to-Abate Sectors

The study will examine both the technical and economic feasibility of deploying CCU in cement manufacturing, one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonise globally.

Captured CO₂ will be directed towards producing green methanol or conversion materials, providing industries with low-emission alternatives and supporting India’s broader sustainability goals.

Vinod Bahety, CEO – Cement Business, Adani Group, said the grant underscores Ambuja’s commitment to responsible innovation.

He further noted that CCU represents a strategic tool for shaping sustainable construction and expressed confidence that the partnership with IIT Bombay and Eco Tech Sweden would accelerate climate-resilient solutions.

He highlighted the company’s wider net-zero roadmap, including renewable energy integration, adoption of alternative fuels, and the deployment of advanced technologies.

Bahety added that the company will align TNFD disclosures from FY 2026 and continue strengthening biodiversity actions.

He also pointed to the world’s first commercial deployment of Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater technology and Agentic AI-driven operations as key components of Ambuja’s sustainability strategy.

International and Academic Collaboration

The initiative leverages IIT Bombay’s expertise through the National Centre of Excellence in Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage, which will support advanced mineralisation and CO₂ capture technologies.

Eco Tech Sweden will contribute by optimising energy consumption, recovering waste heat, and integrating renewable electricity and heating to enhance the CCU model’s sustainability.

The grant accelerates Ambuja’s pathway to a net-zero future, already validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The company is advancing low-carbon manufacturing through the commercial use of Coolbrook’s technology and expanding its renewable power portfolio, which includes 1 GW of captive wind-solar capacity and 376 MW of waste heat recovery systems.

Moreover, Ambuja continues to strengthen nature-positive outcomes as India’s first cement company to adopt TNFD.

With a target of achieving a 30 per cent thermal substitution rate and embedding Agentic AI across its operations, the company aims to enhance efficiency and long-term emissions reduction.

Ambuja emphasised that the CCU project marks a transformative moment for the cement sector’s decarbonisation journey.

By integrating CCU with its existing sustainability initiatives, the company aspires to advance a circular carbon economy and lead India’s and the world’s transition towards greener industrial solutions.
