On Wednesday, Air India, owned by the Tata Group, announced that it has become the first airline in India to offer inflight Wi-Fi connectivity on domestic flights.
The service is currently available on Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft operating on domestic routes.
In a statement, Air India stated, “This makes Air India the first to offer in-flight Wi-Fi Internet connectivity on flights within India, enabling travellers – flying for leisure or business – to stay connected to the Internet during their flights, and to enjoy browsing, accessing social media, catching up on work, or texting friends and family.”
Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer, Air India asserted, “Connectivity is now an integral part of modern travel. For some, it is about the convenience and comfort of real-time sharing, while for others, it is about greater productivity and efficiency.”
“Whatever be one’s purpose, we are confident that our guests will appreciate having the option of connecting to the web and enjoy the new Air India experience on board these aircraft,” he added.
The airline explained that passengers could access Wi-Fi using laptops, tablets, and smartphones with iOS or Android operating systems.
The service also allows multiple devices to connect simultaneously once the aircraft is above 10,000 feet.
This rollout follows a successful pilot program on international routes.
The program, tested on Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft, covered routes to destinations like New York, London, Paris, and Singapore.
Air India currently offers free Wi-Fi service.
Similar to the domestic offering, the complimentary Wi-Fi is however part of an introductory period. The airline plans to expand this service gradually to other aircraft in its fleet.
