Adani Ports, Marseille Fos Forge IMEC Alliance To Boost India–Europe Trade Corridor

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and the Port of Marseille Fos have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration in trade facilitation, port innovation, and energy transition.

The agreement aims to reinforce connectivity between India and the European Union through the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

The MoU was signed during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, reflecting the growing India–France strategic partnership.

It aligns with the broader IMEC vision unveiled at the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi, which envisages a 6,000-kilometre multimodal corridor integrating maritime routes, rail links, digital networks, and clean energy pathways.

Under the partnership, the two ports propose establishing an IMEC Ports Club to coordinate efforts among key hubs along the corridor. This initiative also seeks to institutionalise dialogue, streamline policy inputs, and support investment frameworks that advance IMEC infrastructure.

On the eastern flank of the corridor, APSEZ’s Mundra and Hazira ports operate as a multimodal logistics gateway linking South Asia with West Asia. Marseille Fos, as the western European gateway, adds approximately 70 million tonnes of capacity and extends the corridor deeper into continental Europe.

Focus on Innovation and Sustainability

The collaboration will promote IMEC as a secure, competitive, and sustainable trade route through joint campaigns, trade fairs, and targeted business engagements. Both sides will also pursue technical exchanges in port digitalisation, smart platforms, cybersecurity, alternative fuels, and shore power systems.

A key component is the proposed Mundra–Marseille Fos Green Maritime Corridor, aimed at supporting low-carbon shipping and greener supply chains.

Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director and CEO of APSEZ, stated that the partnership completes the final European leg of the corridor and will accelerate information exchange, trade flows, and supply-chain resilience.

Hervé Martel, CEO of the Port of Marseille Fos, also said the two ports, positioned at opposite ends of the corridor, share a responsibility to energise and structure this emerging trade backbone, fostering a more efficient and sustainable link between India and Europe.
