Adani Group Reiterates Long-Term Sustainable Energy Partnership With Bhutan

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, has emphasised that the conglomerate will continue to deepen its partnership with Bhutan, describing the relationship as one built on sustainability, trust, and long-term value.

Speaking on recent developments, he highlighted the growing momentum in the energy cooperation between India and the Himalayan nation.

Sharing his thoughts on the social media platform X, Adani said returning to Bhutan is always a gratifying experience.

“Deeply privileged to be a founding member of the Gelephu Mindfulness City. Indeed, a visionary initiative of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck that reflects Bhutan’s enduring commitment to mindful and sustainable development,” Gautam Adani said.

Highlighting key achievements, Adani said important milestones had been reached in the energy partnership with Bhutan.

Adani further stated, “We advanced key milestones by signing an MoU for 5,000 MW of hydropower and officially commencing the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project”.

Acknowledging support, Adani thanked Bhutan Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay for being present at the ceremony marking the occasion.

Reaffirming commitment, he stated that the partnership would continue to grow on the foundations of sustainability, trust, and long-term value.

Details of the Hydropower Agreement

Earlier, in May last year, the Adani Group announced the signing of an MoU to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. The agreement was signed by Druk Green Power Corporation Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin and Adani Green Hydro Ltd COO Naresh Telgu.

Importantly, the signing took place in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister. It was also attended by the Minister for Energy and Natural Resources and other senior officials.

Additionally, the MoU builds upon the ongoing collaboration for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project.

Under the arrangement, DGPC will hold a majority 51 per cent stake in the Wangchhu project. Meanwhile, the Adani Group will hold the remaining 49 per cent.

According to Adani, this development represents a deepening of the group’s partnership with Bhutan. More recently, in September, Adani Power and DGPC signed a shareholders’ agreement to establish the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project.

Alongside this, an in-principle understanding on the power purchase agreement was initialled. Additionally, a concession agreement was signed with the Royal Government of Bhutan.

These agreements were concluded in the presence of the Bhutan Prime Minister and Gautam Adani. As a result, the project will be implemented on a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model.

Overall, the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project is expected to involve an investment of around ₹60 billion for renewable energy infrastructure.

Collectively, the initiatives underline the strengthening India–Bhutan partnership, with a shared focus on clean energy, sustainable development, and long-term economic value.
