Adani Green Claims Global No1 Spot; Signals Asia’s Command In Clean Energy Race

Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has surged to the top of Energy Intelligence’s prestigious Global Top 100 Green Utilities ranking, cementing India’s rising influence in the worldwide clean energy transition.

The renewable energy arm of the Adani Group climbed from third place last year to first, overtaking China National Nuclear Corporation, which slipped to fourth position.

The latest ranking highlights a decisive global shift toward market-driven low-carbon power generation, with Asia emerging as the new epicentre of renewable growth.

AGEL’s ascent underscores not only its expanding renewable portfolio but also India’s growing credibility as a serious force in the global climate and energy conversation.

Energy Intelligence, a UK-based energy research and analysis firm, compiles the annual ranking under its Low-Carbon Energy service.

It evaluates utilities based on the scale of their renewable energy assets and their overall greenhouse gas emissions footprint. Adani Green’s performance across both metrics propelled it to the top of the global table.

Notably, Adani Green stands as one of only two Indian companies in the global top 10 and one of six Indian firms featured in the top 100.

This marks a dramatic jump from 2011, when just one Indian company made the list. The change reflects India’s accelerated push toward renewable capacity and climate-aligned growth.

India Leads Green Transition

Speaking to Energy Intelligence, Adani Group Chief Financial Officer Jugeshinder ‘Robbie’ Singh said the global energy transition has entered a decisive economic phase.

He stressed that policy frameworks and cost structures now favour clean energy, making the transition inevitable rather than aspirational.

According to Singh, renewable power has become a commercially compelling option, driven by competitive economics rather than regulatory pressure alone.

The top 10 ranking reveals a clear geographic realignment. Half of the leading green utilities now come from Asia, including two Indian firms and three Chinese companies, while European utilities occupy the remaining slots.

Analysts see this as evidence that Asia has seized leadership in the global shift toward clean electricity.

Energy Intelligence data further shows that carbon dioxide emissions from companies in the Top 100 fell by 6 per cent last year.

While this reduction was slightly lower than the 9 per cent drop recorded in 2023, it still outperformed the long-term historical average decline of 3-4 per cent annually over the previous decade.

James Cockayne, Managing Editor at Energy Intelligence, said the world’s power sector is rapidly entering what he described as the ‘Age of Electricity.’

He noted that utilities are increasingly investing in wind and solar as the cheapest and fastest options for new generation capacity.

According to Cockayne, Asia’s dominance in the rankings reflects its aggressive investments and expanding renewable infrastructure.

Adani Green’s top ranking sends a strong political and economic signal. It positions India as a front-runner in the clean energy race and reinforces the narrative that the global energy transition now follows capital, cost, and competitiveness, areas where Asian players are setting the pace.
