Rahu Temple: Divine Uttarakhand Temple With Significance of ‘The Severed Head’

Rahu and Ketu are two mythological figures who are known as demons fighting against the deities. Both of them after drinking drops of ambrosia following the Sagar Manthan, are also known to be immortal beings.

Rahu Temple is located at a place in devabhoomi Uttarakhand where Rahu’s severed head had fallen. People come from every corner of the country come to this temple seeking planetary peace.

Astrologically, if Rahu is wrongly placed in the horoscope or if Rahu is sitting on an inauspicious place, then there is a temple in the country where worshiping him gives relief from his pain. This temple of Rahu located in Thalisain block of Kotdwar in Pauri district of Uttarakhand is considered a divine historical temple.

It is believed that worshipping done in this temple never goes in vain. It is also very special in terms of architecture. Rahu is worshiped along with Lord Shiva in this temple. It is also considered to be the only temple of Rahu in the world, where Shiva and Rahu are worshiped together.

The belief of relief from wrath of Rahu

It is said that if Rahu has his vakra drishti (anger) on an individual, then hardly anyone he can be saved from the wrath of Rahu. Rahu is also called the deity of Kaliyuga. This is the reason why people come from far and wide to visit the temple. Many mysteries are also associated with the temple. According to what people here say, the credit for the construction of the temple goes to Adi Guru Shankaracharya.

However, there is another belief that to avoid Rahu Dosh, Pandavas, after constructing this temple worshiped Lord Shiva and Rahu with complete vaidik instructions. Even today Rahu and Shiv are worshiped in this temple. Sudarshan Chakra and the severed head of Rahu have been beautifully engraved on the walls of the temple here.

Shivling has been established in its sanctum sanctorum about which it is said that it was established by Rahu himself. Rahu was a devotee of Lord Shiva, due to which it does not cause any harm to the devotees of Lord Shiva during its Dasha or Mahadasha.

Special bhog is offered in the temple

Whoever comes to this temple for the removal of Rahu Dosh, offers moong khichdi in the form of Prasad. Moong khichdi is given to everyone in the Bhandara held here as Prasad. Considering the antiquity of the temple, its protection is under the Archaeological Survey of India.
