How good is the new government of Nepal for India?

New government in Nepal being led by PM Sher Bahadur Deuba appears to continue good old relations with India. But the changing political scenario of the neighbor is going to allow this the way India want? Nevertheless, India has to keep up the amity knowing that this is a new Nepal.

New government of Nepal: In the general elections held in Nepal, the ruling parties which had already formed the coalition government have won again. They have got 90 out of 165 seats. Now Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba has again become the Prime Minister.

New government of Nepal: Though Deuba’s party could garner fifty seven seats and Pranchad’s Communist Party got only eighteen seats but as far as votes are concerned, Prachanda’s party has a bigger percentage with 27,91,734 votes while Nepali Congress got only 26,66,262 votes. What does this signify?

New government of Nepal: Now the influence of the Communist Party will be stronger. The coin of the Communist Party will run faster now in Deuba’s government. Deuba will become the Prime Minister again, but now he has got to pay more attention to the Communists, who were once staunch opponents of the Nepali Congress. He had also brutally murdered many Nepali Congress activists during his rebellion and there was no shortage of venom against India in his party manifestos.

South Asian political compulsion

It is the political compulsion of our South Asia zone that in order to come to power, even staunchest opponents start colluding. No wonder former Prime Minister K.P. Oli’s Communist Party, along with its alliance partners, are determined to keep the Deuba government in check, but it is also possible that some parties and MPs may break away from Oli’s alliance and start supporting Deuba.

The significant Chinese influence

They know that Nepal cannot survive without India and PM Oli had continuously raised the flag of anti-India. He had committed so many atrocities on the Madheshis and tribals which requires the Government of India intervention for taking strict measures against them. Apart from this, by declaring Nepal’s claim on the Lipulekh area of the frontier, PM Oli did not hesitate to display enmity with the Modi government. Apart from this, in those days it was believed that the female ambassador of China in Kathmandu was the real guide of the Nepalese government.

This is the reason why the seats of Oli’s party and his alliance have decreased in the current election. As far as Deuba is concerned, he is more experienced and calmer than both Prachanda and Oli. PM Deuba had also come on a visit to India a few months ago. He will continue to give priority to India without spoiling his relations with China. India will also make efforts towards help the Nepali Congress, whose leaders like Koirala have always been India lovers.

Continuity depends on the two top leaders

If there is harmony between Deuba and Prachanda, then only this government can complete its five years. It has become a hallmark of Nepali democracy that governments change in the blink of an eye. But it is also a specialty of Nepalese democracy that neither the rule of monarchy can be regained there nor the flag of military rule has ever been raised there.
