Nepal faces a historic political shift as youth-led protests lead to the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and the formation of an interim government.

Nepal’s Government Shake-Up

Ex-PM K.P. Sharma Oli led a coalition government formed in July 2024. However, internal tensions and public dissatisfaction over corruption and governance issues led to instability.

Coalition Government

In September 2025, the government imposed a ban on several social media platforms, igniting widespread protests, particularly among the youth, who viewed this as an infringement on their rights and a symbol of authoritarianism.

Protests escalated across Nepal, with demonstrators clashing with security forces. The unrest resulted in at least 72 deaths and over 1,300 injuries, marking one of the deadliest periods of political unrest in recent history.

 Demonstrations Turn Violent

Facing mounting pressure and criticism, PM  K.P. Sharma Oli resigned on September 9, 2025. His departure marked the end of his fourth term in office and a significant shift in Nepal's political landscape.

 Prime Minister's Resignation

Following Oli's resignation, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was appointed as Nepal's interim Prime Minister on September 12, 2025. She became the country's first female head of government and pledged to restore stability.

Formation Of Interim Government

Youth activists, led by Sudan Gurung and his organization Hami Nepal, played a pivotal role in organizing and leading the protests. Their efforts led to significant political changes without seeking formal positions of power.

The public has expressed hope for meaningful reforms under the new leadership. Families of the victims have demanded justice and accountability, with some refusing to collect bodies until their demands are met.

 Public Response

In response to the crisis, President Ram Chandra Poudel announced that parliamentary elections would be held on March 5, 2026, aiming to restore democratic governance and address the nation's political instability.
