US-authored draft resolution condemned Hamas' attack on Israel and called for the release of the hostages.

The resolution did not call for a ceasefire and recognized the rights of both countries to defend themselves. Russia, China, UAE voted against the resolution.

Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, expressed his surprise that these nations abstained from voting on the resolution.

2 countries abstained  and  10 voted in favor of the resolution.

To counter the US-authored draft, Russia put forward its proposal calling for an "immediate, durable and fully respected humanitarian ceasefire".

After the Russian draft was vetoed by the US and the UK, both resolutions were ultimately rejected.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took responsibility for the security breakdown that allowed Hamas to strike Israel on October 7.

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, stated that the battle between Israel and Hamas can go well beyond the Middle East.

According to Biden, he requested Israel to postpone its ground assault of Gaza in order to speed up the process of the captives' release, but he did not insist that military operations be suspended.

"What I have indicated to him, is that if that’s possible to get these folks out safely, that’s what he should do. It’s their decision,” Biden said adding that a two-state solution will be the way forward once the war is over.
