Extremists in northeastern Nigeria have killed at least 37 villagers in two separate attacks

The attacks occurred in Yobe state's Geidam district

The first attack in Yobe state in over a year took place, highlighting the ongoing threat of Islamic extremist rebels in the region

In the first attack, 17 people were shot dead in Gurokayeya village

In the second attack, a land mine was used to kill 20 people who had gone to attend the burial of the initial victims

Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group, has been involved in a 14-year insurgency in northeastern Nigeria

The group aims to establish its radical interpretation of Islamic law, Sharia, in the region

The insurgency has resulted in the death of at least 35,000 people and the displacement of over 2 million

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, in office since May, has struggled to end security crises in the northeast and other regions

The Yobe state government held an emergency security meeting to address the attacks, attributing them to extremists entering from neighboring Borno
