The August Movement is another name for the Quit India Movement. In July 1942, at Wardha, Maharashtra, the Congress Working Committee passed the Quit India Resolution.
On August 8, 1942, Mahatama Gandhi officially introduced the movement during the All India Congress Committee meeting in Bombay.
Yusuf Meherally is credited with coining the slogon Quit India.
The campaign demanded that British colonial rule in India end completely and immediately.
Gandhi gave his speech in Mumbai at the Gowalia Tank Maidan, popularly called August Kranti Maidan.
In response, the British detained a number of national leaders, including Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Abdul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi.
A number of young leaders emerged as a result of the leadership vacuum.
