The word was selected from a shortlist of eight terms that were chosen to capture the spirit, ethos, or themes of 2023.

Following a public vote that reduced the number of choices, Oxford lexicographers made the ultimate determination.

Other contenders included  Swiftie, Beige flag, situationship, prompt, and de-influencing.

Among the other three finalists for the year, Swiftie is an enthusiastic fan of the singer Taylor Swift.

Prompt refers to an instruction given to an artificial intelligence program or algorithm determines or influences the content it generates

Situationship refers to a romantic or sexual relationship that is not considered to be formal or established.

"Rizz" - Gen Z slang for "style, charm, or attractiveness," or "the ability to attract a romantic or sexual partner" - has been named  Oxford's 2023 Word of the Year.

Oxford claims that the term "Rizz" was first used in writing in 2022.

The term can also function as a verb, as seen in expressions like "to rizz up," indicating the act of attracting, seducing, or engaging in conversation with someone.
