NASA issued a warning regarding an asteroid known as 2016 LY48. On September 16, this near-Earth asteroid came the closest to Earth
This space rock is moving towards Earth at a terrifying 38997 km per hour, according to NASA.
NASA has provided information about this asteroid's size using its cutting-edge ground- and space-based satellites and telescopes
It is almost as large as a building, with an estimated width of 310 feet. An object must be at least 492 feet broad in order to be labelled as a potentially hazardous object.
Therefore, NASA's Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies has not designated Asteroid 2016 LY48 as such.
On September 2, 1928, this asteroid made its very first close approach to Earth, and on September 17, 1949, it made its final close approach.
Asteroid 2016 LY48 is anticipated to approach Earth on September 15, 2185, at a distance of 4 million kilometres, after today.
It is a member of the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, which are space rocks that travel near Earth and have semi-major axes that are bigger than our planet's.
These asteroids were found in the 1930s by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth and are named after the enormous 1862 Apollo asteroid.
