August 2023 promises to be a captivating month for stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts with an array of celestial events illuminating the night sky

Get ready to witness the magic of the cosmos as we embark on a journey through the celestial wonders awaiting us in the coming weeks

August 3 – Close Approach of the Moon & Saturn:  Witness the Moon and Saturn's close encounter in the pre-dawn hours, with the chance to see Saturn's rings through a telescope

August 8 – Close Approach of the Moon & Jupiter:  Enjoy the proximity of the Moon and Jupiter in the night sky, easily visible with the naked eye or stargazing equipment

Aug. 12-13- Perseid Meteor Shower:  Catch the stunning Perseid meteor shower, with up to 100 meteors per hour, peaking on the night of August 12-13

August 18 – Peak of the κ-Cygnid Meteor Shower:  Look for the κ-Cygnid meteors radiating from Draco near Cygnus on the night of August 18, with around 3 meteors per hour

August 26 – Asteroid 8 Flora at Opposition:  Spot asteroid 8 Flora, the largest closest to the sun in the main belt, on August 26 with binoculars or a telescope

Aug. 27- Saturn Opposition: Observe Saturn at its brightest and closest to Earth on August 27, no special equipment needed

Aug. 30- Super Blue Moon:  Don't miss the rare Super Blue Moon on August 30, the second full moon of the month, appearing larger and brighter than usual
