Food shortages spread. Starving communities turned desperate. Disease followed famine, leaving thousands dead across Europe, North America, and Asia.

Scientists later discovered Mount Tambora in Indonesia had erupted in 1815. Its ash cloud blocked sunlight, changing the world’s climate for a year.
