NASA's Bennu asteroid sampler images released after 3.5 months. Delay caused by two fasteners holding the sampler lid, according to Science Alert.
High-Resolution Images Released After Delay
The asteroid material inside the sampler is thought to have remained untouched for 4.5 billion years, ScienceAlert reported.
Asteroid Material Untouched for Billions of Years
Sample dropped during OSIRIS-REx's Earth flyby in Sept '21 proved challenging to open. NASA successfully removed fasteners on Jan 10.
Why did the Delay Happen?
The curation team, after solving the issue, will remove the collar, transfer the sample to trays, photograph, weigh, and store it in Houston.
